Q & A

What is Christian Marriage?

Lutheran theology views marriage as a divinely ordained institution, a gift from God for companionship, joy, and the strengthening of the human family, emphasizing its sacred and public covenantal nature. The apostle Paul says that as man and wife united in the estate of matrimony are two in one flesh, so God and man are united in the one person Christ, and so Christ and Christendom are one body. It is indeed a wonderful sacrament.

What to expect?

The ceremony will begin at 2:00 PM. We kindly ask that all guests be seated in the church by 1:50 PM to ensure a smooth start. The ceremony is expected to last no longer than one hour. Following the ceremony, we invite you to join us at Hidden Pines Barn for hors d'oeuvres and lawn games. The wedding party will arrive around 5:00 PM, with dinner, catered by The Forge, to be served at approximately 5:30 PM. The bride and groom plan to depart the reception at 10:30 PM. We kindly ask that all guests wrap up the evening by 11:00 PM so that clean-up and take-down can begin smoothly.

What is the dress code?

Attire for the day is anything that makes you feel beautiful as well as comfortable. The bridesmaids will be in blue floral, and other members of the family, whom we have asked individually, will be wearing navy blue. Temperatures have historically averaged in the 60s in Houghton this time of year. And lastly, in the case of rain, the reception venue has cover inside the barn and a tent outside as well.

What will there be to do at the Wedding?

We want our reception to be full of energy, laughter, and connection—a true celebration of love and friendship! Along with a delicious BBQ meal and sweet treats (ice cream), we’ll have a cozy hot cocoa bar to keep you warm throughout the evening. Get ready to hit the dance floor with music you help us choose when you RSVP, mixed with some of our personal favorites. And because it wouldn’t be our wedding without it, yes—there will be a basketball hoop! So bring your game (and your sneakers) if you’re up for a little friendly competition. We’ll also have cornhole, a kids’ table with a coloring station, and plenty of opportunities to relax, laugh, and just enjoy each other’s company. For those who tend to get chilly—especially like the bride—we’ll have soft blankets available to keep you cozy. Don’t hesitate to grab one if you need it!

What else is in the Keweenaw?

Quincy Mine Tour: Discover why this area is known as “The Copper Country.” Emmalee spent a few summers as a tour guide here, so it holds a special place in our hearts! Go for a Hike: Some of our favorite hiking spots include Mount Baldy, Horseshoe Bay, the Michigan Tech Trails, and Hungarian Falls. Mountain Biking: Check out the Michigan Tech Trails for a great ride—or, if you're up for more of a challenge, check out the world-class trails in Copper Harbor. A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum of Michigan Tech: A museum of rocks that truly rocks. Take a Drive Through the Keweenaw: Enjoy a scenic drive up to Copper Harbor and take in the views that we both have grown to love. Along the way, there are some beautiful beaches that provide amazing sites for rock hunting.
