Emma and Clayton first met in Ms. Steward’s geography class during their freshman year of high school. Although they’d shared a class in 8th grade, Clayton had no idea Emma was the same girl from the year before. In an attempt to separate friend groups, Ms. Steward unknowingly brought them together by seating Clayton across the table from Emma. Before long, their entire table had become close friends. Emma eventually started helping Clayton with his assignments and maps—not because she liked him, of course, but because she felt a little bad for him! That summer, the two no longer had classes together, but they had each other’s numbers. Emma was the one who asked Clayton to hang out first. At just 15, it meant relying on their parents for rides and bringing along a few friends. While it was meant to be a casual group hangout, Emma secretly had other motives—she was trying to make another guy jealous. But to her surprise, Clayton was easy to talk to, funny, and genuine. By the end of the day, the two had formed a real friendship. Soon after, Clayton invited Emma to a movie. She was convinced she’d never like him and fully expected him to try and “make a move”—but he didn’t. They just enjoyed the film as friends. Emma even told her friend afterward that there was no chance she’d ever date him. A few days later, Clayton began calling her every day, and little by little, Emma started to see him differently. When school started back, Clayton had a football scrimmage. Emma’s mom dropped her and a friend off to watch. After the game, Clayton nervously asked Emma to walk down the field with him. There, on August 29, 2019, he asked her to be his girlfriend. Emma said yes. He became her first official boyfriend, and from that moment, they were high school sweethearts. The two went off to college together and, like many young couples, spent a few months apart. But love had other plans, and they soon found their way back to one another. A few years later, while on vacation in Cabo, Clayton got down on one knee and asked Emma to be his forever. She said yes—again.
