A visit to the monastery called “Theoktistis” is about a ½ hour drive from Evdilos. It features a little church built into the rock from days when Ikaria was plagued by pirates. Ikarians used to build their homes into the natural landscape as a way of hiding from pirates. Also, the church on the property features frescos from the 17th century.
Faros is a village near the island’s airport, about a 45 minute drive from Evdilos. It’s a great option for a day trip as its beach has a cafe and two great traditional Greek restaurants. The beach is long and offers views of the neighboring islands (Samos and Patmos). It is a great place for small children as the water is exceptionally calm.
We highly recommend a visit to Afianes Winery, which is located a bit higher up the mountain from the village of Raches. Afianes practices traditional methods of Ikarian winemaking, as close to the ancient method as you can get! They offer tours, have a full kitchen that serves home-made ikarian dishes, and even has a small museum showcasing tools and objects from Ikaria’s distant past.
Seychelles is a picturesque beach in a cove on the south side of the island. Here you can expect calm waters and impressive rock formations. Note that in order to access the beach one must be able to hike along the descending and rocky river bed for a few hundred yards. The hike gets more challenging near the end, requiring a certain level of coordination and balance.
Located in Kampos, just a short drive from where the wedding will be held, a small museum houses artifacts of the Islands ancient past. Open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8am-3pm.
This village is about a 25 minute drive up the mountain from the shore. It is a beautiful drive through a small pine forest. In Raches there are cafes, restaurants, and a few stores offering local products. The square gets more lively at night, as there are a couple outdoor bars that open up.
A great restaurant serving a variety of Greek dishes and just a short drive from Evdilos. If you have the chance to dine here we highly recommend that you also walk through the neighboring village of Akamatra. You can walk to the village from the restaurant.
