We met one night walking back to the parking garage at City Hall after a busy night. We both worked at restaurants in downtown Austin. A mutual friend noticed Emily walking to the garage and initiated conversation. We talked casually but the conversation was cut short because we saw a girl passed out on the stairs. The focus was not on each other anymore it was on making sure this girl got to a safe place. We woke her up and walked her to the W hotel where she could contact her friends. Dumbfounded about the situation we just laughed and walked back to our cars. We said good night and both headed home. Weeks later we inevitably ran into each other at Lavaca St Pub. Emily actually reintroduced herself, I played along but I remembered her the whole time. After a bit of conversation she realized that was that we already met, we clicked and went out dancing all night. We started dating and discovered just how much we had in common then of course fell in love! Fast forward seven years we are still madly in love and are getting married.
The day I asked Emily to be my wife was one of the best days of our lives. It was so special and terrifying. Here’s how it went down. 2020 was officially a nightmare and by July we had gone through enough and needed to get away. Emily decided to plan a trip to see her niece Skylar in Flagstaff Arizona. As soon as we decided on a date to visit I contacted Skylar and we started scheming. Skylar and I discussed different places and ideas on how the proposal would go down, but nothing felt right. It wasn’t until a week before our trip that Emily said why we don’t spend a day at the Grand Canyon. At that moment I knew it had to be there. On the drive out to the Grand Canyon Emily and I got separated from Skylar and her friends. Cell phone service was terrible so when we got to the park we just started walking towards the trail where we thought they would be. It turns out they were actually at a different part of the park. We wondered around the trail and ended up spotting the perfect location to explore, a cliff with no railings that led out towards the canyon. “Out on that ledge is perfect, nothing but Canyon in the background” I thought. We quickly found the rest of the group and headed back down the trail. I filled Skylar in as we hiked down about 15ft or so towards the cliff’s edge. I waited patiently as a couple finished taking pictures then I made my way out to the edge of the 5000ft cliff, the ring was tightly clasped in my hand. I asked Emily to come out to the edge for a photo. She reluctantly agreed and slowly walked out towards edge of the cliff. I grabbed her hand and told her “you’re my best friend and its time I make this official. Will you marry me?” Thankfully she said yes! She then followed up with “You did so good baby, you did so good! But why did you have to ask me on the edge of a cliff!” with shaking knees we made our way back to safety. Skylar and her fiends got the whole thing on video. Best day EVER!
