Nate and I met at the University of St. Thomas in 2011, the summer before my freshman year of college. We were both going to the conditioning workouts the coaches put on for all of the athletes during the summer. During one of the workouts the men’s assistant basketball coach at the time was trying to fire Nate up by telling him he'd be in big trouble if I beat him in any of the sprints (I was busting my butt and Nate was still trying to recover from a night of partying back home lol). Needless to say it was not love at first sight and we did not really talk until the second half of the school year/basketball season. The women’s team traveled with the men’s team to all of our away games and one ride home Nate ended up sitting next to me to watch a movie during the longest trip of the year, New Mexico. After that we started hanging out and talking more. We designated Monday, Wednesday, & Friday as our fun days after the season and came up with all kinds of quirky things to do around Houston. Pretty soon we were inseperable and finally after a couple of months we went from friends to dating on May 2nd, 2012.
I planned my 25th birthday weekend with both our families and some of our best friends at Nate’s parents lake house in Canyon Lake. I had been promoted recently and decided to take some time off from work to celebrate my birthday before I started my new position. We spent Friday night hanging out with everyone as they arrived and then got on the water ASAP Saturday morning. After several hours out on the boat, everyone slowly started heading in to the house to get ready for the night. I was having too much fun hanging out and catching up with my dad that I didn’t even notice him and I were the last two out there! We finally decided to head up and get ready, I was one of the last ones to make it upstairs but when I finally did I was in shock! Everyone had decorated the place for my birthday. There was a photo wall, cake, presents, and the whole shebang! I really had no idea we were going to do all of that so I was already on cloud 9 and completely distracted. After a while of hanging out with everyone and forcing Nate to take photos with me he grabbed my hand, looked at me and said, "I want to take one more outside." This should have been a hint (Nate hates taking photos), but I was so happy and distracted I didn’t think twice about it. We got outside right before sunset. He stopped walking, turned around, got on one knee and asked me to marry him. INSTANT TEARS PEOPLE. After that it was a blur of hugs, photos, toasts and a couple of FaceTime conversations with loved ones that could not be there. That was one of the best weekends of my life and I will forever be thankful that Nate decided to propose with so many of our loved ones present. After 6 years I was finally engaged to the man I fell in love with my freshman year of college. Perfect is the only way I can describe it and somehow that still does not seem like enough!
