In 2015 Emily and I were adventuring into our new career, Respiratory Therapy. We both took a pediatrics internship at Duke University Hospital. Emily caught my eye on the first day of hospital onboarding with her long dirty blonde hair sitting in the front row. It wasn’t until the third day of onboarding did I find out that she too was a Respiratory Therapist. While we worked together, we learned that we held the same values, aspirations, and goals in life. Emily and I worked in all the pediatric ICUs, and sometimes were each other’s only resource. We even got to be part of a team that delivered quadruplets together! We’d spend our evenings decompressing and learning from each others experiences. During a Respiratory conference in Wilmington, NC I took my shot during a walk on the beach to tell her how I felt. It didn’t go quite as I planned, but eventually she took a chance with me. Now, five years later, we have a beautiful home together, still work side by side, and are now both looking forward to the day we call each other husband and wife.
