Question

I just landed in St. Thomas. How do I get where I need to go?

Answer

Once you have collected your luggage (don’t forget to get a free shot of coconut rum while you are at the airport!), you will proceed outside to the taxi area where you will get a taxi to Red Hook ferry terminal. Plan for around 75-120 minutes from the time your flight lands until you arrive at the ferry terminal. These are not the standard taxis you are used to, but rather 10-12 passenger vans. Your van may make multiple stops before you arrive at Red Hook. See below for estimates of one-way fares. Be prepared to pay an extra few dollars for each piece of luggage you have. And plan to have cash. Many taxis do not accept credit cards. If you will be arriving with a group, you will want to consider booking a private taxi. It may be more cost effective and will take you directly to Red Hook from the airport, no additional stops! The company we have used a couple of times is Warren G’s Star Taxi Service and we have had great experiences with them. Once you arrive in Red Hook and buy your ferry tickets (you can also purchase them ahead of time online), take a minute to relax, breathe, and enjoy your first PAINKILLER, the favorite drink of the islands. Think pina colada with a bit of OJ and a sprinkle of nutmeg on the top. Best way to start your island vacation! Your trip to St. John will take about 20 minutes, relax and enjoy it. No beverages allowed on board, so chug down the rest of your painkiller before you board! You will arrive in Cruz Bay. It will be lively and congested when you get there. If you are renting a vehicle, you will pick it up, or meet your representatives in the ferry dock area, unless the rental location is very close to the dock in which case you may be able to just walk. If you want to rent snorkel equipment, I suggest Beach Bum. It is located to the right just after you get off the dock. They are great folks who are both very knowledgeable and provide great customer service.

Question

I made it to St. John... now what?

Answer

You won’t be able to call an Uber or Lyft on St. John, so getting around can take some planning. There are open-air taxis that travel back and forth to several beaches. If you decide to rent a car, please know that they drive on the left side of the road here, and the locals drive fast. Please be careful. Roads are curvy, narrow, and cut through the mountains. If you will be renting a vehicle in St. John, be sure to check with the rental agency on their requirements. Most will require proof of insurance, as well as a valid US license. And don’t worry about the honking. Contrary to what you might think, it’s a good thing! A horn honking, especially where you can’t see the car, is warning you that they are on the other side of a blind curve. It’s a very common practice.
