Question

Will I get altitude sickness?

Answer

Bogota is located at an average of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level, so due this fact some of you guys might get an altitude sickness. In order to avoid it, you should drink big amounts of water the day before to travel and of course during all your stay in the city; as soon as you get your hotel room get some rest and avoid all types of physical activities; eat well, especially carbs and greens, which help you to keep your energy reserves.

Question

What will the weather be like?

Answer

A couple of fun facts: Colombia is the only country in South America that has a coastline on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Bogotá is the capital of Colombia and is the second largest capital city in South America. The city has a subtropical highland climate. The average temperature is 58 °F, varying from 43 to 66 °F on sunny days to 50 to 64 °F on rainy days. Wear warm clothes! Bogota is not a hot city. Think about your outfit for a cold day in fall, those are the type of clothes you guys should pack.

Question

Best way to pay?

Answer

The peso (COP) is the currency of Colombia. Unlike several other South American countries, Colombia will not accept U.S. dollars as payment. Extremely helpful website: https://transferwise.com/gb/blog/money-and-banks-in-colombia About tipping, in most sit-down restaurants, a 10 percent service charge is automatically included in the bill. Tipping is not expected in bars, nor is it expected at cafés. In hotels, usually a tip of COP$5,000 will suffice for porters who help with luggage, unless you have lots of stuff. Tips are not expected, but are certainly welcome, for housekeeping staff.

Question

Other safety/ travel tips?

Answer

-We suggest downloading the app "Whatsapp" in your phone so that you can communicate with Colombian people, businesses, transportation, etc. We also suggest reaching out to your cellular provider and establishing an international plan before traveling. Example, Verizon does $10/day for great international service. -Never take taxis on the street. -Use ONLY Uber/ Uber Black (preferred) -Don’t walk outside with your phone in hand/sight. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Avoid wearing flashy jewelry. Hold your purses and backpacks close to your body/ in front of you whenever possible. -Avoid street ATMs (do it in a shop or a mall) -Don’t underestimate Bogotá traffic -Bogotá is a very bike friendly city. Watch for bikes when walking in crowded streets. -Never accept anything that you don’t know the price of, first establish how much you are going to pay and then engage in the activity or purchase.
