After a series of unsuccessful relationships, Pranay had made peace with his romantic karma. Yet, he couldn’t shake the feeling that someone special was about to enter his life. In March 2022, a friend half-dragged him to an event for single dog owners and dog lovers by “Doggos”. Pranay went along, expecting nothing more than some cute canine company. Meanwhile, across Toronto, Emilee was living her life, single and not in any rush to meet someone. When her friends shared details of the Doggos event, Emilee decided to join for fun and to support her friends. Off they went to Steamwhistle Brewery on March 28, 2022. Pranay arrived with his dog Kumbah and his friend and their dog. As he knelt to pet another dog, Emilee walked past and smiled at him. She doesn’t recall this moment, but for Pranay, he recognized in that smile a kindred spirit and couldn’t stop noticing her for the rest of the evening. The event began with mingling, followed by group activities where attendees were seated at different tables. Unfortunately, Pranay and Emilee weren’t placed together, so they didn’t get a chance to talk. Even so, Pranay couldn’t help noticing her. Her easy, warm, kind presence—and well, she was hot, so there’s that. As the event wound down, Pranay resolved to leave with at least one phone number. All the way across the room, near the exit door, there she was, getting her coat from the coat rack. With single-minded determination, he bee-lined towards her, using Kumbah as his icebreaker. “Hi there,” Emilee said, petting Kumbah. Looking up at Pranay, she smiled. He smiled back. “She’s a bit skittish,” Pranay said. “She’s a rescue dog.” “What’s her name?” Emilee asked. “Kumbah,” Pranay replied. Emilee couldn’t help but notice how cute the man in front of her was - with his long curly hair and eyes that were searching inside hers as they spoke. And while she didn’t know the extent of how this person would change her life in that moment, she did feel the exact same thing inside of her that she was seeing in his eyes. Pranay asked Emilee for her Instagram handle instead of her phone number, finding it a less intrusive way to stay in touch. They exchanged smiles and parted ways. All in all, their conversation was barely a few minutes long. Outside the event, Pranay immediately looked up her profile but assumed she was too young for him. At 34, he wasn’t interested in dating anyone significantly younger. But a closer look revealed she was only two years his junior. Surprised and intrigued, he messaged her that night. Emilee responded the next day, but she was busy with travel plans for the entire month of April. They chatted intermittently on Instagram, with Pranay liking her stories and occasionally exchanging messages. Shortly before her return from Costa Rica, Pranay asked about her plans. “I’m arriving Saturday, April 30,” she replied. “How about a date on Sunday, May 1?” he asked. So on May 1, they met—and the rest is a house, two weddings and a partner-in-life later…
