Travel Note
The most common and most reliable way to get on island is to take one of the ferries that leaves from Hyannis, New Bedford or New York City. We recommend booking roundtrip ferry tickets in Jan-March 2025, as they can sell out. From Hyannis Both the Hy-line and Steamship Authority ferries depart regularly from Hyannis to Nantucket Harbor. You may choose to take the fast ferry (1 hour and recommended) or the traditional (vehicle/freight) ferry (2.5 hours). Both offer parking near the docks in Hyannis and Hy-line provides a shuttle bus from the Hyannis Transportation Center if traveling by train/bus. While it is absolutely not necessary, if you do plan to bring a vehicle over, you must book that reservation well in advance. Car reservations will open in January of 2023. From New York City The Seastreak Ferry leaves directly from Manhattan only on Friday afternoon (note it will arrive late on Friday evening) and returns Sunday afternoon. This is a great option on a calm sunny day, but can get a little bumpy when it's windy. The ride takes approximately 6 hours. Advance reservations are necessary.
