Travel Note
There are limited Airbnb options on MDI, so weekly rentals via Knowles (linked) might be better options and allows small groups of friends to stay together! Prices per person can easily be under $500 for the week!
Flight
There are a few ways to get to Mount Desert Island! For most travellers, we recommend flying into Bangor Airport — it’s about an hour from the island and an easy place to rent a car. There’s also a small local airport (Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport) with flights from Boston if you’d like to fly closer. Portland International Jetport is another option — it’s the largest airport in Maine, about a three-hour drive from the island. And lastly, there is Boston Logan airport which might be an ideal choice for international folk or West coast people to fly direct. The drive is a little under 5 hours to the island.

Travel Note
If you’re driving from Boston to Bar Harbor, you will drive through Portland, a perfect early stop for coffee, lunch, or a stroll along the waterfront. From there you will head to Brunswick, at which point you can choose your own adventure. The fastest way is north through Bangor, about 4.5–5 hours total, but with fairly limited scenery. For a more scenic adventure, take coastal Route 1—about an hour longer. Rockland, Camden, and Belfast are all charming towns worth a visit, with cozy inns, great seafood, local breweries, and beautiful harbor views. Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park is also a nice short hike for sweeping vistas of the coast & a good way to break up a long drive!
