The Water Witch Club at Monmouth Hills in Highlands, New Jersey has a rich history that dates back to 1895 when New York City developer Ferdinand Fish founded the club. The club's name comes from James Fenimore Cooper's 1830 novel The Water-Witch, and Fish intended it to be a social environment for artistic people. The club purchased a large tract of land on Mount Mitchell, including an area that extends down to the Shrewsbury River, and built a casino, clubhouse, and other structures. The original casino, built in 1905, included a billiards room and assembly room.
