Atop Mill Mountain sits the Mill Mountain Star, the world’s largest freestanding, illuminated man-made star at 88.5 feet tall. The Star can be seen clearly driving into Roanoke at night, though the short drive to the overlook provides wonderful views both day and night. You’ll also find parking for the Mill Mountain Zoo which showcases conservation efforts for vulnerable, threatened, and non-releasable species.
Downtown Roanoke provides attractions for all, from the Taubman Museum of Art and the Pinball Museum to the Candy Store. There are many dining options in the area and local shops to explore!
Of course Elliana had to put a national park corridor on this list…Access to the BRP out of Roanoke starts at Mill Mountain, past the turn for the Star. If weather is good and if you have leisure time, I highly recommend taking a drive! The views are beautiful, especially in fall with the changing colors.
Location of our engagement pictures! Carvins Cove is a reservoir and natural reserve in Roanoke County, about 30 minutes from downtown. Take a breath of fresh air on a kayak or walk the trails around the reservoir! Kayaks are available for rent.
Though this list only contains a few, there are many things to check out on your trip to Roanoke. Here’s a list of some local restaurants and activities to check that we love: Benny Marconi’s (downtown), Mamma Maria’s (Salem), Texas Tavern (downtown, a classic), Little Green Hive, Taaza, Scratch Biscuit Co, Our Daily Bread (Roanoke), Falafel House, catch a movie at the Grandin Theatre, fish or relax at the Roanoke River, take a hike off the Parkway or Appalachian Trail such as Sharp Top, Dragon’s Tooth, or McAfee’s Knob…
