After moving to California in May of 2017, Ellery got connected with the youth program at San Clemente Presbyterian Church through her cousin and began serving as a worship leader for the high school youth group. Daniel grew up at SCPres and in the Spring of 2018, he showed up to play drums for youth group one night. They remained friends for several months until one day after church, Ellery responded to one of Daniel's Instagram stories telling him how well he played bass at church that day. They messaged back and forth a bit until Daniel invited Ellery to go for a cruise on his parents' boat that afternoon. They laughed and talked until the sun was beginning to set and as he walked her to her car, Daniel asked Ellery on an official date the following week.

It was the day Daniel picked up the ring and he just couldn't wait any longer to ask! He called Ellery immediately and told her that he was going to get off work early so that they could go watch the sunset. Daniel coordinated with Ellery's friend Monika to set up a picnic and take pictures during the proposal. He picked Ellery up, and after driving all over town to throw Ellery off and give Monika more time, they arrived at Pines Park. They found a spot overlooking the ocean where Daniel got down on one knee and popped the question. Ellery said "yes" (obviously) and they celebrated with champagne and a picnic while watching the sunset!
