Once upon a time in Greencastle, Indiana Ellen stood at a check-in table retrieving her dorm room keys. It was freshmen move-in day at DePauw and Matt, too, was in the student union picking up his key with his roommate, and future groomsman, Jimmy McDonnell. Matt surveyed the room taking mental notes (as he does) until a girl—wearing a white crewneck sweatshirt—across the room caught his attention. In this moment, the world slowed down for him. Matt’s incessant nerves of starting college were erased as he watched the bubbly smile of this girl. Jimmy began to ask Matt something, snapping him out of his doe-eyed trance. Uninterested in the question, Matt turned to him and, legend has it, said, “I’m going to marry that girl.” That girl was Ellen. Later that night, Matt and Ellen would meet at a dorm party and find out they were both swimmers. If it wasn’t clear before, now Matt knew he was going to marry this girl. But…this would entail some patience. The two, along with their inseparable group of friends, would spend a lot of time together over the next year and a half. Even though they were just friends, everyone knew there was a special connection between Ellen and Matt. At some point in time (neither of them knows exactly when), the connection was too hard to ignore and they found themselves lovebirds (or, as Ellen’s mom refers to them, “the birds”). They would go to Italy on a May-term trip where they kissed under Venice’s Bridge of Sighs, hiked the Dolomites, and learned the word for pitcher in Italian. It was at some time during this trip that Ellen knew she was going to marry this boy. In the coming year, the Riehle and Gullickson families grew close, too, starting a tradition of spending Thanksgivings together (8 years, and counting!). Summers were spent water-skiing at the Riehle’s Wisconsin cabin and spring breaks were dedicated to becoming regulars at Casey Key’s Tiki Bar. After graduation, the two moved to Chicago where they endured the separation of living at home. Ellen eventually moved into the city with best friend, and future maid-of-honor, Emily Ward which made Matt happy because she was closer. Three years and a pandemic later, Ellen and Matt got their own apartment in Chicago. The two thrived living together—from binge watching Survivor to turkey burger Wednesdays. Matt started studying for the LSAT and eventually got into law school. Soon thereafter, Matt got down on one knee and put a ring on Ellen’s finger. The two now live happily ever after in Madison, Wisconsin and cannot wait to celebrate their journey with you all.
