John was a senior and I was a junior. Somehow our schedules aligned to where we had study hall together. I guess the saying is true that boys who are mean to you like you because John would make paper footballs to launch at me every day. Even though it was study hall we had together, we could never stop laughing. It wasn't until after John graduated high school that he asked me out. Little did we know some of the best years of our lives were about to start.
It was the day before my 26th birthday. John and I had gone to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina for a long weekend beach trip and to celebrate my birthday. John was very adamant about getting dressed up for dinner and walking on the beach that night. John was noticeably nervous and quite during dinner and while walking down to the beach. As we walked the beach we decided to take a selfie. A couple stopped and asked if we would like them to take our picture for us. John kept asking if they could take another photo. Finally John had the couple record us and he got down on one knee. No wonder why he was so nervous! Of course I couldn't say "YES" fast enough. We celebrated that night with Rita's Italian Ice.
