Elle and I met during the fall of our freshman year at Baylor University. Coming from a family of Baylor graduates, my college choice was a given. Growing up visiting Waco often, I was already familiar with my new home. Little did I know that my bride-to-be would make the same decision I did. Elle grew up in Jupiter, Florida- a place where most people would never want to leave. Thankfully, her adventurous spirit led her to explore Texas colleges. A book by Chip and Joanna Gaines sparked her interest in Baylor, and after visiting, she fell in love with it. Like most freshmen, we started college with excitement and uncertainty. Looking to get involved, we both joined FLO (Freshman Leadership Organization). Fun fact: my parents were in FLO, and my dad won’t hesitate to tell you that he proudly served as President in 1993. While the organization had its merits, we quickly realized it was also a thinly disguised speed-dating club. We first met during a group ice cream outing. Our conversation was unfortunately brief- probably because I was nervous to talk to someone that beautiful. A few weeks later, Elle and I were coincidentally paired for a FLO date. Determined to make a good impression, I took her to breakfast in downtown Waco on the morning of October 3rd, followed by a trip to a pumpkin patch in Robinson, TX. We clicked immediately and had a great time. As we spent more time together, it became clear I’d hit the jackpot. Elle wasn’t just the prettiest girl I had ever seen- she was smart, kind, and loved Jesus. She was everything I prayed for in a future spouse, and I’m so grateful God brought us together. Throughout college, we’ve grown closer and shared so many special moments. Getting to know and love the Van Boven family has been incredible, and seeing how much my family loves her makes it even better. We’re tremendously thankful for our parents, who have modeled Christ-centered marriages for us both. We’re also thankful for our siblings, extended family, friends, and others who have supported and encouraged us along the way. Their love and influence have shaped us into who we are today. As we prepare to start our life together in Dallas, we couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.
Anyone who knows me knows I’m not exactly the easiest person to surprise. Despite my nosiness, Landon somehow managed to pull off the most perfect engagement — and to my absolute shock, it was a complete surprise. On November 1st, I went about my day like any other. I called my mom and dad multiple times during my walks to and from class, FaceTimed Landon a few times, and hung out with my roommates. With all my nonstop communication, everyone thought I might be catching on to their plan. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t. Fast forward to that evening, my roommates and I had plans to grab dinner with Summer and her parents. Before dinner, we decided to stop for drinks with just the five of us. Normally, I love dressing up for a night out, but for some reason, I insisted on wearing jeans and heeled flip-flops. Clearly, I had no idea where the night was heading. After we had drinks at the Redherring Hotel, we started driving to Moroso. Fun fact: I’m notorious for not paying attention to where we’re going or how we’re getting there. But as soon as we started driving through Cameron Park, I knew something was up. I told myself I was being dramatic and brushed it off — no way it was happening tonight. Right as that thought crossed my mind, the car stopped, my roommates turned to me, and one of them asked, “Do you want to change your outfit?” I couldn't believe it. I looked up, saw Landon’s car parked in front of us, and spotted a photographer. At that moment, everything clicked. My roommates, being the thoughtful friends they are, brought a backup dress for me. I quickly changed, shed a few happy tears, and tried to process what was happening. The next few minutes were a blur. As I walked towards Landon, I felt a mix of emotions — excitement, disbelief, and overwhelming joy. I will never forget the feeling of watching him get on one knee and knowing that I have found the person I am meant to spend my life with. If that wasn't enough, Landon had arranged for my parents and brothers to be in Waco for this special moment. Not only that, but he planned an after-party with our families and friends. It was the most incredible feeling to be surrounded by so much love and support. That night, it was abundantly clear just how blessed we are to have such amazing people in our lives. In short, Landon pulled off the surprise of a lifetime. I am so incredibly grateful for him, for the people God has placed in our lives, and for this new chapter we’re about to start together. Let’s get married!!
