After meeting at FIU orientation day, Anthony and I were each other’s first friends in college. At the end of our first year, we had become best friends, and we would spend time with the same small group. One Saturday night, we made plans with the group to play billiards in Doral. Anthony arrived first and began receiving texts from members of the group that they needed to cancel. When I arrived, Anthony was waiting for me with the news that all of our friends had ditched us! We decided to make the best of it and grab a bite to eat before entering the billiards hall. After a quick Urbanspoon shuffle (#TBT), we decided that Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine had a humorous name, so we gave it a shot and put it on Google Maps. The app took us through Doral Golf Course but there was no restaurant to be found. After Apple Maps took us to the back of a Denny’s parking lot and Anthony’s car GPS took us to a sketchy club in a Doral strip mall, we agreed that Flanigan’s would do. Unfortunately, we had to wait an hour for our table, and they sat us down next to the cash register with a curtain designed to divide separate sections of the restaurant draped across our table, blocking our view of each other. After dinner, we went back to the billiards bar, but after one game we were kicked out for being under 21 years old. Despite all of these calamities, Anthony and I began to realize that no matter the circumstances, together we could always have a fun time, with our cheeks hurting from the smiling and laughing. This accidental first date sparked a few more dates in the following weeks, until Anthony asked me to be his girlfriend on April 26th, 2013. Exactly seven years later, we will spend our first full day as husband and wife together on April 26th, 2020.
