One pleasant gray day in March 2023, Liza sat alone in her apartment, enjoying a freshly made bowl of pasta. As she neared the end of her meal, a dreary sense of boredom crept over her, weighing heavily on her mind. She longed for something—anything—to break the monotony of her routine, which revolved around volleyball and school. Just then, her thoughts were interrupted by the sharp, rhythmic sounds of pickleballs and paddles colliding. Curiosity piqued, she peered out of her apartment window and spotted a group of young people engrossed in an intense match. Among the players, she recognized her good friend Jesse Lowder. “Why not say a quick hello?” she thought, deciding it couldn’t hurt. Without hesitation, she dashed down to the courts with eager determination. As she approached, something—or rather, someone—unexpected caught her attention. Tyler, mid-match and effortlessly claiming yet another victory, suddenly noticed a striking young woman walking toward his group of friends. Drawn to her immediately, he found himself distracted even as the game concluded. After the teams reshuffled and the action resumed, he spotted her sitting alone, quietly observing. Summoning his courage, Tyler approached her and struck up a polite, casual conversation. Little did they know, this seemingly simple exchange would mark the beginning of something far greater than either of them could have imagined.
Tyler was born to Boone and Laura Hodges in Colorado but grew up in Bedford, Wyoming with his older sister, Bailey, and his younger brothers, Jacob and Nathan. An avid golfer, he also loves snowboarding in the winter and slalom skiing or surfing in the summer, as well as playing basketball and spikeball. (He's learned a lot more about volleyball since meeting Eliza and going to all her home games or watching the away games on ESPN+!) He worked in high school in a variety of jobs from being a chef at a senior center to early morning snow removal at the temple to waiting tables at a Mexican restaurant. After his 2020 high school graduation, he served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Dallas, TX, and New Delhi, India. He moved on to college and working as a law clerical and insurance agent after his mission and currently works full time while taking online classes through UVU. He loves his family and is a fantastic uncle and friend! Eliza loves his sense of humor and fun, but especially how easygoing and pleasant he is to spend time with. He definitely has a knack for making her smile! He appreciates the simple things in life- a slice of Costco pizza from the food court, a great song coming on shuffle in the car, a big hug after a long day, etc. Whatever kind of help Liza needs, Tyler is quick to offer. He is excited to marry and live with his best friend!
Eliza was born to loving parents, Randall and Erin Hakes, and grew up in Folsom, California. She is one of five siblings: Allie, the oldest, followed by Camille, William, and Everett. Eliza treasures family time and would do anything for her loved ones. With a deep passion for volleyball, Eliza graduated high school and was fortunate to play competitively in college at UVU. When she isn’t immersed in her studies or volleyball, she pursues a variety of talents and hobbies, including calligraphy, playing the violin, painting, drawing, and enjoying outdoor activities or anything that keeps her active. Eliza has always worked hard, striving to excel in everything she does. Whether it’s working in the school towel issue room, creating crafts, or playing games, she gives her best effort every time—you can bet she’ll give you a run for your money! Tyler fell in love with Eliza’s infectious laugh, bright smile (dimples included), her goal-oriented work ethic, her compassion for others, and her playful love for food and tiny utensils. She makes sure Tyler’s head is never left unscratched and keeps him informed on the latest health trends. She is the best. Eliza is thrilled to live life with and marry her best friend!
