Our Lady of Knock holds deep personal meaning for us. The Shrine in East Durham is modeled after the original Knock Shrine Chapel in County Mayo, Ireland, one of Ireland’s most revered pilgrimage sites and a place of prayer for generations of Irish families. That connection is part of our own story. Patrick and Elizabeth became a couple at the original Knock Shrine in October 2024, when Patrick gave Elizabeth a Claddagh ring there. One year later, in October 2025, Patrick proposed to Elizabeth at the very same location. Choosing Our Lady of Knock in East Durham felt like a meaningful way to honor that moment and bring our story full circle. The East Durham Shrine itself was established in the 1950s and has long served the Irish-American community of the Catskills, offering a peaceful and spiritual setting rooted in faith, heritage, and tradition.
While we considered locations on the North Fork of Long Island and in the Woodlawn / Riverdale / Westchester County area, East Durham ultimately offered the best balance of logistics, proximity, calm surroundings, and value. Having the church and reception just minutes apart makes the day far easier for guests, and the overall affordability allowed us to invite more family and friends—something that mattered greatly to us. East Durham is often called the “Irish Alps,” and it holds special significance for both of us. Patrick has strong ties to the Irish community here, and Elizabeth’s family has been coming to East Durham since the 1960s, when her great-grandmother Katie Mellett Woods vacationed here with her Mellett sisters. The Woods and Farragher families continue that tradition today, holding family reunions in East Durham—most often at Gavin’s—every summer.
The reception will be held at The Shamrock House, a cherished East Durham landmark that has been welcoming guests for over 70 years. Long regarded as a cornerstone of the Catskills’ Irish-American community, it has hosted generations of weddings, family celebrations, and gatherings. Its current owners—both from Ireland—have been running the property for the past decade, continuing its tradition of warm hospitality, excellent food, and attentive service. Patrick and Elizabeth have stayed there personally and attended events there, and the venue is consistently very well reviewed. For convenience, there is a general store less than a one-minute walk away, and directly across the street is Angel’s Diner, open 7:00 AM–9:00 PM, seven days a week. The nearby town of Cairo, NY also offers additional shopping and restaurants.
The engagement and wedding rings were passed down to Elizabeth from her paternal grandmother Dorothy Petersen and are 80 years old! Elizabeth is named after Dorothy’s mother, nicknamed Elsie. Inside the wedding band, there is an engraving of the initials of her paternal grandfather and the date of their wedding.
13 is Elizabeth’s favorite and lucky number! When you add up 0+6+1+3+2+0+2+6 = 20 and 2+0 = 2. The numerology behind the number 2 is partnership!
Patrick and Elizabeth first connected through the NYC Type One Diabetes Nerds group, a community for people with Type 1 Diabetes interested in new technologies. In late 2021, Elizabeth posted about her Reiki and wellness certifications, and Patrick—already into Reiki and naturopathic approaches—reached out for a business call. They talked for months and built a friendship before meeting in person in July 2022. Their first date was at the Irish Coffee Shop on McLean Avenue in Woodlawn, where they shared shepherd’s pies, talked for over two hours, and felt an instant spark that soon grew into love.
