How We Met

Way back in the year 2004 the Smith family began attending Trinity E.C. church, and about six months later a 12 year-old Elizabeth began going to youth group, quickly becoming involved in everything she could. Meanwhile, Dale, just 30 minutes away, was busy hosting his own after-youth group parties. We knew nothing of each other. Eventually Dale graduated and left for Missouri, then Dallas, while Elizabeth adventured out to California. Six years and a much longer story later and Dale was led to his dream job just 30 minutes away from where he grew up - as the youth pastor at Trinity church. He got settled in, was running the ministry, getting to know the teens and volunteers, quite a few of which were Smiths. Dale would casually ask Courtney and Malachi how their "sister in California" was but really thought nothing of it. Two short years later Elizabeth was also led home and decided to go to 70's night at youth group to help out, where she met this new youth pastor. Elizabeth's version of this story goes something like "My mom introduced me to Dale, I said hi, he said hi" Dale's version... "I saw Elizabeth from across the room and thought WOW. That's the sister from California?!" The night went on and Dale will tell you that he went up to his office after youth group, his heart beating fast, and paced the floor, never having felt that strongly before. It took some time, many failed attempts to talk, Elizabeth dodging Dale because she was late getting paperwork in for volunteering, an accidental shoot-down when Dale asked if he could help her set up the photobooth at the Valentine's dinner...and then it happened. That glorious email when Elizabeth delivered the photos and asked about getting together for coffee to volunteer regularly with youth group. Coffee turned into texting, turned into BOOKS of texting turned into a three hour breakfast date. Setting up for youth group together, fluttering hearts, an official first date and the rest is history
