We will arrive in Venice on September 16th. September 16th, Day 1 Venice - We plan to spend the afternoon just walking around Venice and taking in the sites. September 17th, Day 2 Venice - Spend the day in Venice. Start with a Photo Tour of Venice which will end in a Gondola Ride. September 18th, Day 3 Venice to Misurina (Dolomites) Mike will drive our tiny Fiat into the mountains. Once we arrive we will tour around the area of Misurina.
September 19th, Day 4: Wedding Day! At Dawn, we will go to Lago di Braies to take pictures at the lake. We will row ourselves onto the iconic lake where hopefully we won't tip over. Afterwards, we will enjoy the countryside stopping in various locations. Before Sunset, we will hike to Tre Cime where we plan to do our vows.
September 20th, Day 5 We will say good bye to the Cortina d'Ampezzo area and head to Ortisei. This is where we will pack a lunch and head up the moutain via Gondola for the day. Explore the beautiful mountains and have a picnic. We plan to check out everything we can before settling for the night there. September 21st, Day 6 Pack up the Fiat and head to Tirano. Tirano is a small Northern Italy town. It is the beginning stop for the Bernina Express. We have booked a countryside home to call ours for the next 2 days. We will walk around the small town and find a nice place to eat. September 22nd, Day 7 The Bernina Express...this is the panoramic train that will bring us into Switzerland. The train has a scenic stop along the way to St. Moritz. Once we get into St. Moritz, I will have to fight Liz from buying an abundance of chocolate as we only have so much luggage space. See the iconic Kulm Hotel and have a nice lunch before we take the train back to our home away from home in Tirano. September 23rd, Day 8 After another night in our countryside home, we will be moving on to the west via tiny Fiat to leisurely wander through the mountains on our way to Lake Como. We have left this day open for spontaneous pictures in the mountains, and stops along the way. We want to enjoy the spectacular views and the winding roads (Mike does, not Liz) as we make our way to the next leg of our journey.
September 24th, Day 9 After waking up in northern Italy, we will travel to Milan in the morning to drop off the car, and spend some time in the city. Afterward we are heading back to Venice via express train. Once there we will swapping out our colder mountain clothing for warmer climes. Because tomorrow we head to southern Italy! September 25th, Day 10 Southern Italy, here we come! Bright and early in the morning we will be catching the fast train all the way to Rome. Our friends Frankie and Peter will be joining us there. After meeting up, we will be spending our day wandering the Pantheon area of Rome, and getting settled in our apartment in the city. September 26th, Day 11 Rising early, we want to hit the streets and get some photographs around the iconic points in the city before the crowds fill them. Later on in the day we will be taking a guided tour of the colosseum and other historical icons around the city. Sampling the different foods in Rome will also be the focus of our time there, especially the Gelato! September 27th, Day 12 Time to hit the Amalfi coast! We leave early morning to take the train all the way to Sorrento, where we will hop on a bus through the mountains to see the Positano area and the small villages on the coast. After a day shopping and eating our way around the Amalfi, we will be returning to Sorrento for the evening to prepare for our Pompeii tour the next day.
September 28th, Day 13 After a quick breakfast on the streets, we will all leave Sorrento via bus to visit Pompeii for the day on a guided tour of the ruins, as well as a hike up the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It will be up to the boys to makeshift up a wagon to get Liz to the top, but we have accepted the challenge! Our mission is to reach the top in 30 minutes (they only give you an hour to finish the hike). After the long day in Pompeii, we will return to Sorrento and catch the late water ferry to the island of Capri, where our hilltop vacation home awaits. September 29th, Day 14 Weather dependent, we will be spending the day around the island of Capri. We plan to rent a boat to explore the coastline and see all of the well known sights like the Blue Grotto and the famous Faraglioni di Capri. The remainder of the day will be spent walking the small town of Capri and it's many scenic hikes and walkways. And of course, more GELATO! With the number of stairs in Italy (especially Capri), we figure we won't need to count calories. September 30th, Day 15 Waving farewell to Frankie and Peter in the morning, we will travel back to the Sorrento area where they will travel back to Rome.
October 1st - October 6th Our plans for this week are in flux, but we want to slowly make our way back to Venice via rented car, while exploring the Tuscany area of Italy. We have two airbnbs set up as bases when we are there. One is located in Contignano where we will stay in a cute fort and the other location will be in Romantic Chianti. We plan to visit Saturnia, Pienza, Siena, Chianti, Pisa, and Florence. Leaving the car rental in Florence and taking our last train to Venice to fly home.
We had initially planned to travel to Paris for the 3rd week of the trip, but due to the riots and burnings occurring in Paris, we have instead extended our stay in the Tuscany region to experience the countryside of Italy. We still plan to go at a later time.
