Believe it or not, LaToya and James first met over 15 years ago at Fieler Elementary School in Merrillville, Indiana. At the time, LaToya was starting her career as a second-grade teacher, while James had just joined the school as a year-long substitute art teacher. In the early days of their friendship, they often spent time together through their mutual friends, Taria and Rahsaan Taylor. Although they connected during that season of life, their paths eventually diverged. James moved to Wisconsin to explore a new career opportunity, and they gradually lost touch. Fast forward to July 2024—James made the decision to return to Indiana to be closer to family and friends. Upon his return, he found himself wondering about LaToya and began asking mutual friends about her. Once he got settled, he decided to reach out. On November 19th, he sent her a heartfelt email that read: Hi LaToya, I heard you are an AP now and I wanted to say congrats. I bet you are killing it! I hope you're being the change the students need. James Those simple words rekindled a connection that had been waiting in the wings for over a decade—and the rest, as they say, is history. 😊
