We met in the winter of 2013. Jaime had just returned from studying abroad in Paris, and René (Edward) had moved back to Philadelphia that fall from Austin to get his Master’s degree at Temple. We struck up a conversation online about the X-men, which led to Jaime sending René some of her favorite issues to read. After hour long phone calls and non-stop daily texting René asked Jaime out on their first date. He picked her up after one of her classes at UArts. She came walking up to him in her bright purple peacoat and matching purple Doc Martens and René was smitten at first sight. They drove to West Philly and went to Locust Moon, a comic store, and then went to the local theater to see Django Unchained. Jaime remembers how fast her heart was beating as she built the courage to hold René’s hand in the theater. She was 21 years old, but somehow he managed to give her butterflies like was 13 again. They shared a small kiss in the car as René drove Jaime to her best friend, now maid of honor, Alisa’s apartment back in center city. Before parting René asked Jaime on a second date, which she bashfully agreed to. Once inside Alisa’s she poured over the details of the date to her best friend, and remembers saying how sweet he was, and how she worried he was too good to be true. René drove back to his apartment and recalled thinking “shit, I might be in love”. He texted Jaime as soon as he got home to let her know what a good time he had with her, and how he couldn’t wait to see her again. That July, just 5 months after their first date, they were moving in together.
