The Virgin of Covadonga, The Lakes of Covadonga

33556, Spain

In the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park, just over 20 kilometres from the village of Cangas de Onís, you will find the Lakes of Covadonga. They can easily be accessed by road and there are various trails in the area to explore. We have not yet accessed the lakes, but have been to see the gorgeous Santa Cueva and Basilica of Covadonga, 12km away from the lakes. Known as the 'Cova Dominica' or the 'Cave of Our Lady', this cave is a place of worship and pilgrimage dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga in an area of stunning natural beauty, featuring a pond with crystalline waters and a mystical fountain which is said to have magical powers. All this can be admired from the Basilica, which has been known as the 'Cathedral of Covadonga' for many years. You can buy candles in the store to light for blessings in the Cova, or throw coins into the pond for good luck.

Bufones de Pría

Bufones de Pría

Spain

The Asturias coast of Spain meets the tumultuous northern Atlantic Ocean, and when the sea is angry (which is often), natural water spouts form as the waves beat against the cliffs and rocky shoreline. The water spouts can be up to 100ft when the waves are high, and the performance of nature is stunning. When I first saw them, I watched in awe for an hour! There are numerous 'Bufones' outside of Llanes, some just a walk away and some reachable by car. I highly recommend viewing at least one!
