Things To Do

Taksim (City Center)

Taksim area, Istanbul’s vibrant center, is full of energy and mixes history & culture, fun fact: Ece and Mithat went to high schools just five minutes apart here before they even met. Istiklal Avenue is lined with tons of shops, cafes and historic red trams—perfect for a lively stroll. The trendy Cihangir, just off Istiklal, charms with its artsy cafes and laid-back vibe, a nice spot to kick back. Nearby, Galata Tower, a 14th-century Genoese landmark, offers panoramic views of the Bosphorus and Golden Horn. Hop on the historic funicular or walk down to Karaköy, which blends history with hipster flair, boasting street art, coffee shops, and a sweet waterfront feel. Finally, Galataport, a sleek new waterfront development, has a beautiful promenade, dining options, and stunning Bosphorus views, making it a fresh highlight for exploring Istanbul’s modern side. Restaurants & Bars: Mikla, Mürver, Yeni Lokanta, Karaköy Güllüoğlu, Patisserie de Pera, 360 Istanbul, Finn Karakoy

Sultanahmet (Old Town)

The Old Town of Istanbul, centered in Sultanahmet, is a historic gem offering a glimpse into its Byzantine and Ottoman past. Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia), a 6th-century marvel, blends Byzantine and Ottoman styles with its vast dome and stunning mosaics. Nearby, Blue Mosque is a 17th-century Ottoman masterpiece with its blue İznik tiles and six minarets. Topkapi Palace reveals the lavish lives of sultans through its Harem, Treasury with the Topkapi Dagger, and Bosphorus views. Beneath the bustling streets, Basilica Cistern, a 6th-century reservoir with 336 columns, features eerie Medusa heads in its shadowy depths. Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest markets, offers over 4,000 shops with jewelry, spices, and leather—ideal for souvenirs. Finally, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, a trio of collections, display artifacts from ancient civilizations, bringing history to life for visitors. Restaurants: Lokanta 1741, Olden 1772

Besiktas (Bosphorus Waterfront)

Beşiktaş district’s Bosphorus waterfront seamlessly blends Ottoman splendor and modern coastal life. Begin at Dolmabahçe Palace, the first European style Ottoman palace from 19th-century, famed for its ornate halls and grand crystal chandeliers—then explore bustling Beşiktaş Çarşı for local eateries, pickle shops (Ece’s favorite), and popular Turkish breakfast spots. Continuing north, you’ll pass the luxurious Çırağan Palace Kempinski—an Ottoman-era palace turned hotel—before reaching the Neo-Baroque Ortaköy Mosque, sitting beside the Bosphorus Bridge. A bit farther, Ece and Mithat’s former workplaces line the route to Arnavutköy, known for its historic wooden mansions and trendy seafood spots. Finally, Bebek awaits with chic boutiques, gourmet dining, and scenic waterside strolls, capturing Istanbul’s timeless beauty in one lively stretch. Restaurants & Bars: Alaf, Sıralı Kebap, Bebek Balıkçı, Sur Balık, Mangerie, Divan Kuruçeşme, Baylan, Alexandra, Backyard, Lucca
