Historical Asansör: Take the historic lift for a stunning panoramic view of the bay. It’s the best spot for a coffee at sunset. Kemeraltı Bazaar: Explore one of the world’s oldest markets. Don’t miss a traditional Turkish coffee at the historic Kızlarağası Hanı. Ferry to Karşıyaka: Hop on a ferry from Konak for a scenic 15-minute sea journey to see the city from the water. Alsancak & Kordon: Walk along the famous seaside promenade, enjoy the lively atmosphere, and relax on the grass like a local. If you have an extra day, visiting Ephesus is well worth the trip. It is located approximately 85 km (a 1-hour drive) from Güzelbahçe. Ephesus Ancient City: One of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean. You can see the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre at your own pace. Ephesus Experience Museum: Awarded "Best Museum in the World" at the TEA Awards, this immersive museum uses high-tech visuals to bring history to life. The House of the Virgin Mary: A quiet, historical site on Solmissos Mountain, visited for its peaceful atmosphere. Şirince Village: A hilltop village 15 minutes from Ephesus, known for its traditional architecture and narrow streets. Travel Tip: Since June is hot, we recommend visiting in the late afternoon. You’ll avoid the midday sun and see the ruins under both daylight and spectacular night lighting. It is a much cooler and more magical experience.
İzmir offers countless spots for a day by the sea, and while we’ve listed our favorites nearby, you might also want to explore other beautiful areas on your own. Here are our top picks: Çeşme & Alaçatı: Visit Alaçatı for its iconic stone houses and narrow streets. Enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Ilıca Beach or explore the lively Beach Clubs and Çeşme Marina. Urla: Just 15 minutes away, Urla is a gem for food and art. Walk through "Art Street" for local boutiques. Most importantly, explore the Urla Wine Route; these lovely vineyards offer exquisite tastings and sunset views. For swimming, head to the pristine bays of Demircili or Altınköy. Seferihisar: Explore the ancient city of Teos and Sığacık. For a unique experience, we highly recommend the incredibly clear water of Akvaryum Bay. Travel Tip: There are many beautiful wineries in the area. We visited Urla Şarapçılık (Urla Winery) and loved it; they also offer tours in English.
İzmir has its own food culture, mostly focused on Aegean flavors and street food. Here are some local tastes you might enjoy: Traditional Breakfast: Start with a local classic: Boyoz (a flaky pastry) with a hard-boiled egg. For a longer experience, enjoy a full Serpme Breakfast with local olives, cheeses, Menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and peppers), sucuk with eggs, and various börek or gözleme. Street Food: Try Kumru (a warm sandwich), Midye Dolma (stuffed mussels), Kokoreç (spiced grilled lamb), or Söğüş (cold meat wrap). As a desert try Bomba, the famous chocolate-filled sweet from Çelebi bakery Alsancak. Seafood & Rakı: Since you are by the sea, the fish is always fresh. Enjoy it with local mezes and try Rakı, Turkey’s famous anise-flavored spirit, the traditional companion to a seafood dinner. Note: While İzmir is best known for its seafood, you can find many great Kebab restaurants. Enjoy a classic Döner plate with Ayran, or try Lahmacun, Pide, and Adana Kebap.
