Our paths first crossed in high school, though we were more like passing ships than anything else. She spent her time with the theatre and drama group, while I was probably busy figuring out how to skip my next class. Even though we attended college in the same city, we never got beyond the fleeting glances we exchanged in high school. It wasn’t until years later, during the whirlwind of the COVID-19 lockdown, that fate finally brought us together again. Our first date was at the Cinemark in Grapevine. She had her heart set on watching the new SAW movie—a far cry from my usual film choices—but honestly, she could’ve picked any movie, and I would’ve been there after just a couple of weeks of talking. Little did I know that night of Hollywood gore and cheesy jump scares marked the beginning of something truly special. On our second date, I invited her over to watch the fireworks from my balcony. Perched high on the hill, we could see not just one firework show, but several lighting up the sky from surrounding cities. As we sat there, watching the bursts above us, I realized the true blessing of the woman beside me. Every moment felt perfect—she laughed at my dumb jokes, stayed endlessly positive, and had a way of celebrating even the smallest moments like they were winning lottery tickets. Once the fireworks finished lighting up the sky, I knew I couldn’t let the night end without telling her how much I wanted to be with her. To my relief, she felt the same way, and from that night on, it’s been my greatest privilege to love, protect, and cherish her. Our journey from two strangers in high school to two adults finding each other at just the right time feels like nothing short of a miracle. We’re incredibly grateful for the shared values, loving families, and amazing support that have shaped our lives together.
