Unfortunately, our plans to postpone until September 2020 did not work out as we had hoped. Instead, let's try this again in June 2021 for our first/fifth anniversary! Same time, same place, different year. Third time's the charm?!
We were thankful to be able to celebrate with our parents, grandparents, Leif, and Tink in person and dozens of friends joined via Zoom. It was an unusually hot and sticky day in East Tennessee with no air conditioning in the Hops & Hollers garage and Tyger had to bring Dustin's forgotten suit pants and the fur babies at the last minute; but we made the best of it and said our "I Guess So's"!
"The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." Dustin had the weekend perfectly planned. Helen, GA is known for their Bavarian-style architecture and their annual Lighting of the Village. Tyger is a huge fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, so the setting would be perfect for Thanksgiving weekend in a real-life Hallmark movie. Or so we thought... We arrived Thursday night. We had to check ourselves in. Nothing was open but the OUTDOOR biergarten. No cell service in the whole town. Nothing went according to plan on Friday either. Then it was time for the lighting. It was crowded, you couldn't hear anything, a woman yelled at us, and the star didn't even light up all the way on the tree. It was a train wreck; so Dustin decided to wait. Later on, Dustin suggested they go down to the river. However, there was a redneck family with a puppy who could sense something was about to happen, so they hovered. Dustin launched into his planned speech. Tyger was oblivious and only concerned with the child with a mullet wearing a Miller Lite jacket who was letting the puppy drink from the river. Dustin apparently tried to get down on one knee, but Tyger completely ignored him and turned around to pick up their souvenir beer mugs to get ready to leave. She turned back around to see Dustin on one knee with a ring. She was in complete shock, looked around at the chaos and the mugs in hand, and shouted "I guess so!" The family congratulated them, and the child said, "I knew you was bout ta be engaged. Wanna take a picture with my puppy?" And to that, Tyger said, "YES!" Hence the first post-engagement photo featuring a stranger's puppy. Sadly, we did not get their names for the guest list. We finished the evening by taking a young wanderer to camp in the state park (long story) and enjoying a romantic dinner at Huddle House because it was the only restaurant open in town. The next day, we jetted off to Pittsburgh for a Steelers win. It was perfectly imperfect, just like us!
It's a true fairy tale. Boy joins Tinder on June 6, 2016. Boy immediately matches with a girl with freckles (supposedly his one and only match). Boy and Girl hit it off, even though he likes to wear Chacos and suggests they go kayaking as part of his opening message. Boy and Girl meet the next day at Hops and Hollers. Boy and Girl have an awkward first date. Luckily, the second date went much better. Then, Boy and Girl lived happily ever after... or something like that! So, rather than having to remember two anniversaries, we thought it only fitting to spend our four year anniversary with our family and friends. We have affectionately called the wedding our "anniversary party". Ironically, we will now be celebrating our first/fifth anniversary with everyone instead.
