How We Met

Mtokufa was on an in bound flight to Washington, DC when he received a text message from his dear friend Tiffany. That text message was an inquiry on whether or not he was single. For those of you who know Mtokufa, he doesn’t talk on the phone and rarely texts when he is actively traveling so him promptly responding to Tiffany was quite unusual. On the other end (unbeknownst to Mtokufa), Dunni had sent Tiffany a message inquiring “Who is this handsome man?” which prompted Tiffany’s question to Mtokufa. Here is some context - on social media, Instagram (IG) to be exact, Tiffany shared a post of Mtokufa’s campaign with Stella Artois Africa in her Instagram stories which caught Dunni’s attention. Dunni, who was aimlessly scrolling on IG and is always curious about all things Africa, was intrigued by the artistic angle of the photo and even more so by the IG username "@mtokufa_", which she had never come across before. Dunni stepped completely out of her comfort zone to inquire about him, not quite sure what to expect. Okay, so the text message from Tiffany came through only because Mtokufa’s flight was descending on the tarmac. After Tiffany successfully played match maker, Mtokufa messaged Dunni directly (while still on the plane!) and kicked off what would be hours of texting then talking on the phone with fevered intensity. At the time, Dunni was in Austin attending a conference and Mtokufa was in DC preparing to leave the country in a few days. When Mtokufa finally got off his flight, he called Dunni and immediately asked what day & time he could see her that coming weekend. They both decided the first date should occur in Philadelphia, where Dunni lives. Dunni planned an itinerary that would allow her to show Mtokufa her favorite spots in the city and Mtokufa traveled from DC with several gifts in hand. The morning of their first date, Dunni’s hot water heater exploded and flooded the first floor of her home. She called Mtokufa and told him not to come, while he was already en route. He let her frantically panic and when she was finished, he calmly told her he was still coming, instructed her to get dressed and that he’d make some calls to take care of it. And that's exactly what he did! Instead of going to all the places Dunni listed on her itinerary, they spent close to 12 hours talking in her living room while the Roto Rooter disaster recovery team ripped up the carpet on the first floor, moved all her belongings into the garage and hooked up 16 industrial fans to dry out all the water. Dunni & Mtokufa haven’t stopped speaking since the day Tiffany introduced them. Eight months later, Mtokufa proposed in front of the restaurant where they had their first date and now they eagerly look forward to celebrating their union with you! #LoveTheNgwenyas
