Dulcenea and Cody first met at Northeast High School in Goose Lake, Iowa, through Cody’s classmate—and Dulcenea’s older sister, Isabelle. After spending time together, they quickly discovered how naturally they connected. Cody often offered to drive Dulcenea home from school events, and soon their evenings were filled with drives in his PT Cruiser, music playing, laughter, and endless memories. Their first date was at the movies, where Cody made sure Dulcenea had popcorn in hand at no extra charge. Not long after, he asked her to his Junior Prom. Though she was nervous at first, Dulcenea would said yes—and after a wonderful night of dancing, Cody asked her to be his girlfriend on April 16th, 2019. The rest, as they say, is history.

After high school, Cody began his journey as a Business major at the University of Northern Iowa (Go Cats!), while Dulcenea finished her junior and senior year back home. The two spent two years in a long-distance relationship—though that didn’t stop Cody, who loved Dulcenea so much that he made weekend drives home a regular tradition. Every reunion after a week apart made the distance worthwhile. When it came time for college, Dulcenea decided to join Cody at UNI, pursuing a degree in History and Education. They moved into their first apartment together with their two beloved fur babies, Jasper and Charlie. Countless nights were spent studying together, cooking dinners, and sharing stories about their days. Weekends were filled with exploring campus events, cheering on the Panthers at games, and making memories with friends. Every day brought a new adventure, strengthening their bond and creating a life they loved building together. Cody graduated in the spring of 2024, which meant another year of long distance while Dulcenea finished her degree. Through every call, visit, and countdown to the next weekend, their love endured. In the spring of 2025, Dulcenea graduated and moved to Des Moines, ready to start the next chapter of their lives together.

During Dulcenea’s senior year of college, Cody dreamed of a spring break trip together. When Dulcenea mentioned that money was tight, Cody took matters into his own hands. Knowing her so well, he surprised her for her birthday with a special gift—a book titled Guide to Exploring Washington D.C.—little did she know, it was a hint for an unforgettable adventure. In March, Cody whisked Dulcenea away to one of every history lover’s favorite places. On Wednesday the 19th, as they strolled along the cherry blossom-lined paths of the monument walk, surrounded by the beauty of Washington D.C., Cody asked Dulcenea the most important question of their lives: would she be his wife? After six wonderful years together, Dulcenea didn’t hesitate—she said yes!
