How we metHow we met

September 2016

Yes… we technically met at a bar, but don’t worry, this isn’t your typical “met at a bar after a few drinks” story. We actually worked at the Lakeville Green Mill together. Drake had just been hired as a host, thanks to his brother Cole, who apparently had no idea he was basically signing up to be a matchmaker. (He still hasn’t been paid for that service.) Jess was the bartender everyone loved… friendly, confident, and way out of Drake’s league… or so he thought. Meanwhile, Drake was the new guy who suddenly became very passionate about delivering waters, menus, and silverware to the bar area. Need extra napkins? Drake was already halfway there. Table needs refills? Drake volunteered before the sentence was finished. Little by little, the excuse trips to the bar turned into real conversations, the conversations turned into flirting, and flirting turned into “wait… is this actually happening?” Somehow, between shifts, side work, and the smell of endless pizza and wings, we went from coworkers to “something’s definitely going on here” to the life we’re building today. (And yes—Cole is absolutely taking credit.)

The ProposalThe Proposal

Voyageurs National Park had already become a special place for us. Our annual trips up north were something we looked forward to every year… quiet water, endless islands, and the kind of stillness you only find in the north woods. It was on our second trip there that something shifted for Drake. Somewhere between the sunsets on Rainy Lake and the slow, peaceful mornings on the houseboat, he had an epiphany: This was where he wanted to propose to Jess. Not someday… here, in this place that already felt like another home. That very night, with everyone winding down, Drake asked Jess’s dad, Bruce, if he could talk with him alone. They walked onto the island, just the two of them. There, with his heart pounding, he asked for his blessing… knowing that the next time they returned, he’d be asking Jess the biggest question of his life. From that point on, the plan began forming: the location, the timing, the people who would help pull it off, and the twist involving a drone and a fake eagle’s nest. So on the next year’s trip to Voyageurs, the stage was set. When they arrived the next year at the Rainy Lake visitor center, Drake asked the Park Ranger to mark Big Island on their map, pretending it was an eagle’s nest where they might see baby eaglets hatching. Jess, being Jess, instantly came up with the idea to use her brother Josh’s drone to get a closer look. That was part of the plan… she just didn’t know she was already one step ahead of it. With the help of Jess’s brother Josh, they boated out to the island, and Jess put on the drone headset to watch the footage. As she focused on the screen, Drake quietly moved behind her and got down on one knee, waiting for just the right moment. Then the drone swung back around, its camera pointed at them. Jess looked up from the headset… and there was Drake, down on one knee, ring in hand, asking her to marry him. In that perfect place, surrounded by water, pine trees, and the people who helped make it happen, Jess said yes… turning a beloved annual tradition into the beginning of forever.
