It all started in the summer of 2008 at IMC, a music camp on the border between Canada and the U.S. Douglas attended several week-long sessions each summer, while Jesslyn’s family worked there, so she was there all season long. Between sessions, Douglas would typically return home, but one weekend he stayed. By chance, Douglas and Jesslyn found themselves spending this weekend between sessions together. On that weekend, Douglas tie-dyed his shoelaces with Jesslyn, a quirky, yet memorable moment. Over the next four summers, they would continue to cross paths at camp.
Fast forward to 2018, both Douglas and Jesslyn returned to IMC as staff members. That summer, something changed. They began to spend time together, becoming closer friends. Whether it was during morning prep in the kitchen or Monday afternoons when Douglas would stop by to chat with Jesslyn as she made popcorn for movie night, their bond grew stronger. By the end of the summer, things were a little awkward. As they said their goodbyes, an unsure side hug marked the end of their friendship as they knew it, leaving them both wondering what was next.
After camp wrapped up, they stayed in touch through Facebook Messenger. On September 16th, 2018, what began as casual chats turned into a long-distance relationship. It wasn’t long before the first visit happened. Jesslyn traveled to Canada for a weekend, and they had the most wonderful time together. But as all good visits go, the time came for Jesslyn to leave. As they said their typical midwestern goodbye, they laughed and bonded together when a group of turkeys passed through the neighborhood.
Then, 2020 arrived, and with it, the challenges of COVID-19. With borders closed and travel restrictions in place, their relationship faced new hurdles. But love finds a way, and they made it work. They had virtual dates, watched movies together online, and found creative ways to stay connected. And when the world allowed, they would meet at the Canada and U.S. border, the same place where their friendship began. They camped out in Douglas' van at a nearby campsite, knowing it was the only way they could be together during those difficult times.
On July 30th, 2024, Douglas and Jesslyn stood at the top of the stairs, which overlooked the Peace Gardens, the place where the two countries meet. The golden and pink hues of the setting sun painted the sky over the Peaceful gardens. It was the perfect backdrop for what was about to unfold. As the sun dipped lower on the horizon, Douglas dropped to one knee. He took a deep breath as he held out a ring. “Jesslyn, will you marry me?” For a moment time seemed to stand still. Overwhelmed with joy, Jesslyn’s eyes filled with tears as she said “Yes!” The two hugged, their laughter and happiness filled the air. This marked the beginning of the next chapter in their love story. As they were walking away, the wind picked up in a dramatic gust. Dark clouds started to roll in almost as if nature herself was applauding them. A light drizzle started, adding a poetic touch to the already unforgettable moment.
