Doug and I had our first date on October 20, 2018, at Beer Study in Durham. Our next date was a couple of days later at Southern Peak Brewery (I know... we really like beer!) After walking me to my car he kissed me for the first time and that was it. Doug asked me to be his girlfriend a month later and we have been together ever since. We continue to go out on fun date nights and now include our dog, Nellie! We chose October 19th as our wedding date because we thought it would be special to wake up on our first day as a married couple on our 6-year anniversary, October 20th.

Our proposal happened during a Fall trip to scenic Asheville, NC. At that point in our relationship, we had discussed marriage timelines, looked at rings together, and agreed about our long-term future. This meant that during every special anniversary, dinner, or vacation, somewhere in the back of Laura’s head she was expecting the big question. The beginning of this trip was no exception – Laura coyly asked if anything might be happening that weekend, but I tactfully deflected the question and encouraged us to enjoy our short time together in Asheville. On the morning of December 4th, we went for a hike together on a trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway (a common activity for our mountain trips). After we found a scenic overlook at which to rest and have a small picnic, I encouraged us to take some photos. As Laura had her back turned, taking in the sights of a crisp Asheville morning, I dropped to one knee and popped the question. Surprised, but ecstatic, she immediately said yes! We celebrated the occasion with a small champagne toast and were eager to share the happy news with our friends and family. Asheville had always been a favorite locale of ours to visit, but this weekend sealed it as the spot of one of our happiest memories!
