We recommend booking flights about 6 months in advance for the best pricing and availability. You’ll want to fly into San Juan (SJU), which is the main airport in Puerto Rico.
No passport needed. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so a valid ID works. As of May 2025, travel requires a "REAL ID". To get one, visit the DMV with: Proof of identity, Social Security card, 2 proofs of residency Check your state DMV website for details and book early to avoid delays!
Arecibo is about 1–1.5 hours from San Juan. We strongly recommend renting a car, as ride-share options can be limited and expensive for that distance. Having a car will also make it easier to explore the area during your stay.
Hotels are not very common in this area. Most guests stay in:Airbnb or VRBO rentals (best option for comfort and location) Nearby town: Hatillo, which has convenient access to stores like Walmart and Walgreens See the Travel Tab for recommendations!
