Funny story. In the late 1990's we were both involved with Second City Detroit, but we don't remember meeting each other even tho we still have close mutual friends and ran in the same circles for a couple of years. Karri took off in 2002 to pursue her goals in the entertainment world. While Don gradually stepped away from the Improv world and focused on his career in Crime Scene Investigation. Fast forward to August of 2016. Karri recently moved home from Los Angeles and was invited to attend a charity event in Detroit with friends. Don decided to attend the event as well to catch up with some friends and support the charity. At the end of the night while parting ways, our mutual friends asked if we'd come back again a couple days later when other friends were coming into town from LA to join the charity festival. We both mentioned we weren't sure as we each had weddings to go to, which ignited us to speak for the first time one-on-one wondering if we were attending the same wedding. We were not. Two days later, our mutual friends reached out to both of us later in the evening, asking us separately to come out to play and party with our friends. Tired after a long day, it took a bit of convincing then Karri decided to attend, assured she wouldn't be the only person dressed up for the evening! Don was there in a suit. Upon our reconnection and looking like the official chaperones for the event, we quickly bonded over our earlier wedding experiences while the Hawaiian version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' was being played by the DJ. Then Toto's 'Africa' quickly ignited a spark of remembering an episode of Scrubs, as we continued to talk as if the prior 18-years of not knowing each other rang a familiar tone to the evening... Don friended Karri on FaceBook the next day with a link to the Scrubs episode and a week later asked Karri out on a date to see a movie. We have been together ever since developing a familiar friendship into our One True Love story.
Most of you know the story have seen the epic surprise proposal and famous videos/photos on FaceBook. For those who don't know, Don was increasingly aware of Karri's love for all things Star Wars, so Don created the perfect backdrop and enlisted friends to help his vision come to life on May the 4th {Be With You!}. Karri was "hired" to photograph a Star Wars Day themed evening party for a charity held at a venue in Detroit that turned the place into the Cantina scene from Episode IV, 'A New Hope.' Upon entering this insanely amazing party of her dreams, she got straight to work, photographing Darth Vader and his Storm Troopers. After bossing them around for a bit, Darth Vader called her over with his finger, to which she reluctantly obliged and when he got down on one knee, he took off his mask to reveal a very balmy and teary-eyed, Don, with love in his eyes...she screamed! He then asked her to marry him! Cheering erupted from on-lookers surrounding them, big-band music playing live behind them and with tears in her eyes and her shouting 'OMG,' she quickly shouted "YES!" More surprises filled the night with home-made gifts Don made for her (inside jokes) and being surrounded by love from her dear girlfriends, Don's big brother and loads of nerd-fest goodness. The night was so thought out and perfectly executed by all involved. Words cannot express enough how thankful we are to everyone along the way who made this night so incredibly special.
