Dominique was managing a Starbucks store in Lexington, Kentucky, and decided to enroll in Arizona State University online through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan. This led her to a study abroad program in the Dominican Republic, where she worked on projects like building homes, running health clinics, helping small businesses, and participating in education initiatives with local schools. Tyler, originally from the Bay Area, studying on campus at ASU in Arizona, was also part of the program. Together, they worked on these projects and spent time getting to know each other in the Dominican. Somewhere around day 4 of the trip, while sharing a pack of fruit snacks, Dominique asked Tyler, “Are you even going to try to get to know me?” And that’s where it all began. From that moment, they started talking more, and a connection began to form. After the end of the program, Dominique returned to Kentucky and Tyler to Arizona, but they kept in touch and reconnected at graduation. They spent more time together at Tyler’s sister’s wedding in California, then traveled to each other’s hometowns to hang out with friends and family. By July, they were officially dating. A few months later, Dominique moved to Phoenix to start her master’s program at ASU. Over the years, they’ve built a life together—getting their Mini Aussie, Stark, and eventually building a house in Goodyear. Through it all, they’ve also grown together in their faith, which has become an important part of their journey. Now, almost 8 years later, they’re excited to start this next chapter of their lives together—finally tying the knot and surrounded by their favorite people. It’s been quite the ride, and to think, it all started with a cup of coffee (and a very important question).
