A trip to Quito's Historic Center is a must, and it is easily accessible by the subway. It is the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the world, and it boasts the best-preserved colonial downtown in Latin America, with over 5,000 inventoried buildings. You can see Spanish architecture mixed with Ecuadorian culture. Also, some of the most beautiful churches in South America, like La Compañîa de Jesús, a church that is fully gold-plated inside. The Basîlica del Voto Nacional, the largest church in the country, where you can climb to the bell towers for a 360-degree view. The Church and Monastery of San Francisco is stunning, and the cloisters in the monastery are a unique experience. After sunset, this part of town is known for pickpocketing, and we recommend avoiding it at night. As in any populated foreign city, we advise you always to be aware of your surroundings and your valuables!
The easiest way to see the major sites of the city is to hop on the Quito City Tour Bus. For just $15, you can hop on and off the bus and tour the city. While on the bus, you will have a guide who will explain the major parts of the city, both in Spanish and English.
If you want a more fancy experience, Hotel Casa Gangotena is a luxurious boutique hotel located in Quito's Historic Center. Its restaurant is one of its biggest attractions, offering contemporary Ecuadorian cuisine.
Museo Casa del Alabado is located in a 17th-century colonial house in Quito's Historic Center. It is a museum of pre-Columbian art, housing a collection of thousands of archaeological pieces from Ecuador's ancient cultures (ceramics, metal, stone, textiles, and wood). Also, its restored colonial architecture with courtyards and historical details creates a unique atmosphere.
The Teleférico or Cable Car ride is one of the best ways to see the city from above. It reaches the foothills of the Pichincha volcano, making it an ideal spot for hiking and taking nice photos. If you are feeling adventurous (and ok with the altitude), you can also continue the climb up after you ride to the top of Pichincha volcano. This hike takes several hours and is only recommended for experienced hikers. If you choose this option, make sure you are in good shape and pack food for your trip.
Mitad del Mundo is a short trip outside the city center. The entry costs $5. Here you can take the iconic pictures standing on the equator with the monument in the background. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Quito.
