It is hard to put a date on when Michael and I met. Growing up in the same small town, we crossed paths quite often. The most was when Michael’s sister and my sister were friends. He says he remembers me being a little girl with big glasses. I don’t remember seeing him during this time because Michael was always a “big kid” so I never gave him a second glance. In February 2017, I was scrolling through Facebook in my college sorority house and found his profile. I immediately added him, recalling all the times I had seen him around town. Michael said he scrolled through my Facebook page trying to find pictures of the “little girl with big glasses”, only to realize I had grown up and traded my glasses for contacts. A few weekends later, we found ourselves at the same place when we were out with friends. We started talking and he asked me on a date to get ice cream the next day (he already knew the way to my heart). We have been head-over-heels ever since! We don’t know if it was luck that we found each other or a little help from heaven, but regardless, we are so happy to spend the rest of our lives together.
In true Michael fashion, the proposal was sweet and simple. We had a bet going that he could not surprise me with an engagement ring. I have always been the girl to guess the end of the murder mystery or read signs well enough to know something big was about to happen; surprising me is a tough job. If you know Michael, you know he is extremely competitive. He was going to catch me by surprise if his life depended on it. May 4th, 2019 was like any other Saturday. Michael and I had a wedding to go to that night and he asked if I wanted to eat lunch at his house before getting ready. This did not throw up red flags in my mind because he had just bought a smoker/grill. As I was eating, he brought out a card and said it was from our anniversary that was a few days earlier. After I read the card, I turned around and Michael was down on one knee. I don’t remember much after he got down on one knee. I had to ask Michael later if he actually said, “Will you marry me?” (he did). It was truly the best surprise.
