Nick & I met at Colton’s Steak House, we had both just started our jobs there. Nick was a grill cook in the back while I was a hostess in the front. We didn’t see much of each other until I moved from hosting to start doing to-go orders, where I spent half my night in the back directly across from him. I remember thinking he was loud and maybe a little crazy but also, very cute. He would talk to everyone except me, it felt like. Every time I started a conversation, he’d give me short answers and find a way to excuse himself. For months, I thought he must have hated me. Then on a particularly slow Sunday, I believe it was the super bowl, we both got off early and he offered to walk me to my car. Butterflies, y’all. That was the first real conversation we had ever had. He stopped to talk to another cook right before we made it through the gate, but I kept walking to my car, unsure if he offered to walk me out of politeness or something more. He thought that meant I wasn’t interested. Thus was the end of our little moments for a few months, we went back to stolen glances and grazing fingertips across the counter. Waiting for another excuse to spark up a conversation. I think the moment I knew that he was special was during a weekend closing, I walked past and heard him humming a Brand New song. I can’t even begin to describe the way it makes me feel to hear him sing, even now. On the morning of February 14th, I’d just gotten out of my 8am comp II class when I got a notification from Facebook that Nick had not only accepted my friend request but he’d posted on my wall. It didn’t take long for things to fall into place with us. Everything felt so easy, so natural. He was loud and he loved to joke around but he was also so incredibly intelligent and compassionate. He is intense in every sense of the word and I wouldn’t want him any other way. One day, I’ll be telling our grandkids how it all started with a “hey there, pretty girl” on my Facebook wall.
June 6, 2017. Nick took me to Burns Park so we could hike some trails and enjoy the sunshine. We walked around for a while until we stopped in the middle of a gorgeous barn-red bridge, overlooking a creek. Nick got down on one knee, told me how much he loved me and asked me to be his wife. I was so shocked, I almost cried. He even had his mom there, hiding and taking pictures of our moment. It was so perfect and beautiful. That night we ate at Carino’s and spent our first night together as an engaged couple, at a hotel. If I could relive one day forever, it would be that one.
