It was the first day of anatomy lab in medical school, a moment Divya and Gervase, along with their classmates, had been working towards for years. Each of the 100-plus students in the room was about to begin a journey of exploration and discovery that would leave a lifelong impression. It was simple chance that Divya and Gervase were assigned to be one another’s lab partners that day. A chance that, for them, marked that day as the beginning of another lifelong journey – one of friendship, joy, and eventually love. Very quickly, Divya and Gervase became friends. First, over conversations and jokes during class. Then, over shared lunches in the school cafeteria. As summer turned into fall, they took walks through the South End neighborhood of Boston after class, and they talked about architecture, art, and movies. They occasionally studied together; though, this was mainly an opportunity for Gervase to show off. After that fall semester ended, they were both looking forward to seeing each other more on campus during the spring. However, COVID-19 forced the curriculum to be virtual, and they only saw each other through tiny Zoom screens. They started catching up over the phone, and despite greater physical distance, they grew closer as friends. In the twilight of Summer 2020, Divya and Gervase met again in person, taking a walk together on a beautiful afternoon at one of Divya’s favorite places in Boston, Jamaica Pond. This marked yet another beginning–the beginning of togetherness. Over the next few years, they navigated the rigors of medical school, rotating through various specialities and developing tastes for various caffeinated beverages. They supported each other through the marathon-sprint of one clerkship after another, long days in the library studying for shelf exams, and every moment in between. In July of 2023, they started medical residency together at the same hospital, beginning yet another journey. Residency has tested them both, but it has made them stronger as a couple. Their five (and counting) years together have been filled with countless adventures and shared memories, including marathon drives to rugged coastal landscapes, lots of pesto pasta, and long walks along a rotating roster of picturesque locations in and around Boston. But at the end of the day, they are still the same two kind and curious people who met in the anatomy lab–now best friends, and soulmates. On a mid-September day, at one of their most treasured places, Deer Island in Boston Harbor, Gervase proposed to Divya. And here we are! They are grateful to you for being a part of their journey, and they are excited to make unforgettable memories at their wedding <3.
