How We Met

High School Cafeteria 09/04/2014 - Talent Show 11/22/2014

Matheus' Version: I looked at her. She looked at me. I turned away to avoid making eye contact. This kept going as my little "game". Next thing you know she kept trying to talk to me in the school hallways. I would keep running as she kept trying to talk to me.. "Feooooo". Then, as she was going to give up trying to talk to me, came the talent show, where I jumped into the seat next to her and kept making her laugh the entire night.... Now look at where we are ^__^ Diane's Version: It was the first day of my senior year of high school. It was lunch time, so a group of my friends and I strutted into the lunch room, looking for the perfect spot to end our high school journey. I spotted a table (close enough the the vending machines and to the AC - very important things to a high schooler in 2014) that had a few boys sitting at the very end. I announced, "We're sitting here!" as a bunch of eyes stared. One pair of eyes belonged to Matheus Matos, at the very end of the table, adjacent to where I chose to sit. Every day at lunch, I noticed him staring in my direction but whenever I looked at him, he would look away. On numerous occasions I tried to talk to him but he would literally walk the other way. Why you might ask? Months later, I found out it was because he was shy around pretty girls :) On November 22, 2014 was the school talent show. This was the first day Matheus spoke a single word to me and we laughed the entire night. From that day on, we became the best of friends - starting with a Drake & Josh quote ("Did you call me a liar?" "I ain't caller you a truther!"). Months later, we realized that we were more than best friends, and that we had developed feelings for one another. This is when Matheus asked me to be his girlfriend on July 17, 2015. The rest of our story has only just begun.

The Proposal

Coastal Prime 07/17/2021

We were in Boothbay Harbor, Maine for our six-year dating anniversary. I had booked a reservation at one of the nicest restaurants in the area called Coastal Prime. The restaurant has a stunning view of the harbor with great food and drinks. Our reservation settled at the beginning of sunset and went into the night. As we approached the end of the dinner, Diane and even the group of people at the table in front of us started noticing that I was getting jittery and nervous. I started asking Diane about how she has felt about all our trips and adventures up until this point. Waited for her response and asked, "would you be ready to start our next big adventure?". And of course, this is when I got on one knee and pulled out the ring.

Why July 17th?

The date that will last a lifetime

July 17th as been an important date for Matheus and I over the past 8 years of our relationship. July 17, 2015 Matheus asked me to be his girlfriend after many wonderful dates. We dated throughout his senior year of high school, all of college (for the both of us), and so on. On July 17, 2021 Matheus asked me to be his fiancée in the most meaningful way. It only felt right to us to keep this date for our wedding as well. We hope that you can join us on Monday, July 17, 2023 as we start our next adventure - our greatest one yet.

For all the days along the way
