Picture this: It’s 90º with 90% humidity on a picture-perfect Friday in the heart of summertime Chi. Not a cloud in the sky, and the energy is palpable. Downtown is brimming with people, their sweat and laughter mixing in the heat as Lollapalooza enters its second day. Diane is volunteering at the festival, working her shift to get in for free, and is eager to meet up with her longtime best friend, Lauren. Music festivals are typically the epitome of summer joy, but for Diane, this one felt different. The night before, her dog, Soonie, had unexpectedly passed away. So instead of anticipating the next day’s lineup, she’s looking forward to finding comfort in Lauren's presence. When Diane finds Lauren in the crowd of high schoolers at the American Eagle stage, she introduces her to her boyfriend, Cole, and his college friends, Nic and Anthony. The day unfolds and eventually leads them to the T-Mobile stage, where Childish Gambino is set to close the night. As the crowd begins to thin out, the rhythmic beats of street drummers fill the air, keeping the festival's energy alive. Diane and Anthony part ways, thinking this will be the last time they cross paths. Weeks later, after Lollapalooza has faded into memory, Anthony slides into Diane's DMs for coffee. He’s just moved back to the city after graduating, and while Diane thinks nothing of it, for Anthony, this is his chance to make an impression. And what an impression it was.
