How We Met

Devynn and Garrett met on a dating app in April, 2020 while Garrett was based in Iwakuni, Japan and Devynn was living in Las Vegas, NV. Realizing almost immediately that they knew each other (attending the same high school 5 years apart, Garrett playing football with Devynn's brother-in-law, Donald, at the Naval Academy, and Devynn's longtime friendship with Garrett's brother, Austin), they setup their first FaceTime date. Despite the time difference, the two found each other losing sleep to make time to talk at all hours of the day. Facing unique circumstances involving Garrett's upcoming deployment, Garrett and Devynn made the decision to see where things could go. They took it day-by-day, month-by-month. Several care packages & love letters later, Devynn traveled with Garrett's mom, Laura, to finally connect in person in the LAX Uber waiting area upon Garrett's return to the States in December, 2020. Needless to say, their "first date" was unconventional. They proceeded to spend a weekend in Redondo Beach, followed by a trip to Hanford, CA to check out Garrett's first home (miraculously purchased sight-unseen using spotty boat internet) for the very first time. They made their way back home to Las Vegas to spend the holidays making long-awaited introductions to each other's local family and friends who had spent the past eight months listening to the couple's love story unfold. After another nine months of continued long distance, Devynn got a job offer with her new Make-A-Wish chapter based out of the Hanford area and made the big move in September, 2021. Beginning their relationship 5,931 miles apart, Garrett and Devynn have since greatly enjoyed the opportunity to close that gap, merging their (and their three furry family members') lives. Along the way, Garrett and Devynn have made many weekend trips to Paso Robles together, becoming one of their favorite vacation getaways. The two look forward to sharing this special spot with their dearest family, friends, and loved ones for the celebration of their wedding day!

Our Proposal Story

Ever since spending their first weekend together in Redondo Beach, CA, Devynn and Garrett have wanted to return and re-live all those beautiful, precious memories. The couple decided to return in April 2022 to celebrate their two-year anniversary, staying at the same hotel they stayed at during their initial visit! Garrett made sure the weekend kicked off on a romantic note by decorating their room with rose petals, champagne, and chocolate-covered strawberries (Devynn's favorite). They continued celebrating, enjoying a nice dinner with an ocean view, biking around the boardwalk, and exploring the charming beach town. On Saturday morning, Garrett surprised Devynn with a dream-come-true sailing trip! Garrett and Devynn arrived 30 minutes prior to their scheduled departure time, however, the doors to the sailing company were locked, and there was no captain in sight. After some investigation, they discovered they may have been in the wrong area, so they sprinted over to the other marina a mile away. Still, no sign of any office or captain. Just as Garrett started to think he might just pop the question right there on the dock of the marina, Garrett received a google message from the captain! Turns out they had been in the right location when they originally arrived, however, the captain was on a more leisurely timeline... Despite the series of events, Garrett and Devynn kept smiles on their faces the entire time. While they waited for the captain to make his way to the new dock to pick them up, Devynn asked Garrett if she could borrow the spare sweater Garrett brought in his backpack since it was getting a bit windy. Garrett promptly offered the jacket he was wearing instead, later confessing that the ring was in the pocket of the sweater in the bag, which he discreetly put on just before getting on the boat. They set sail just in time to catch the breath-taking sunset. Taking a few minutes to enjoy the incredible experience, the captain asked if he could try to capture some photos of the couple with the sunset in the background. After a few shots, Garrett got down on one knee. Before he could get a word out, Devynn exclaimed "YES!" Garrett and Devynn are so grateful to Captain Noah for capturing the whole moment on camera, mid-sail. Truly an unforgettable experience they will remember for a lifetime!
