About ten years ago, Devon was working at Deluxe when an opportunity for a trainer role opened up. As part of the interview process, he had to teach a new hire class how to sell a brand-new product, "eChecks." Determined to land the job, he focused entirely on delivering the best possible presentation. In fact, he was so focused that he couldn’t recall a single face in that room. Little did he know, sitting in that very class was a woman named Sierra. After the training session, Devon returned to his cubicle, anxiously awaiting news about the job. But a week later, when the phone finally rang, it wasn’t Deluxe—it was a different company offering him an interview. Since he didn’t get the trainer role, he accepted the new opportunity and left Deluxe behind. What he didn’t know was that Sierra had been working up the courage to talk to him. When she finally made her way over to his cubicle… it was empty. He was gone. Months passed. One night, Devon found himself in his basement, unwinding after work with his usual routine—whiskey in one hand, a ping pong paddle in the other—when he decided to check out Tinder. At first, it was just for laughs, but then, a username caught his eye. It reminded him of a local MC he liked. On a whim, he swiped right and carried on with his whiskey, thinking nothing of it. The next day, he had a message. "Did you use to work at Deluxe?" A slight panic set in—who was this? How did they know where he worked? But as the conversation unfolded, he quickly realized that this mystery woman was Sierra. And she was amazing. Fast forward nine years, and their story had taken them to a life filled with love, a beautiful daughter, a happy home, and a collection of incredible pets (with the exception of Rosie the cat, who remains a bit of a jerk). They now lived in the same house where Sierra had spent much of her childhood, which, in a strange twist of fate, had once belonged to Devon’s grandparents before Sierra’s grandmother moved in. It was as if the universe had always planned for their paths to cross—one way or another. Without the unseen forces that had led them here, Devon might still be in that basement, drinking whiskey and playing ping pong. There were countless reasons why we are the luckiest people on Earth, but for now, this story would have to do.
