This is a tradition of Slovakia, Poland and Western Ukraine We are going to have a Polish Bridal Dance (Lydia being of Polish heritage) at the Reception. We would like to tell you about the tradition of this dance and ask you to join in the fun! The Bridal Dance is usually the last dance of the reception before the bride and groom leave. The dance music is traditional, with many verses sung in Polish. The words can be either serious, religious, or risque. As the music begins, the bride removes her veil and replaces it with a "babushka", thus signifying that she is now a "pari" (or Mrs.). Guests form a line to dance with her and share good wishes before she and the groom begin their new life. Guests may place money in the apron worn by the Maid of Honor as a donation for the privilege of dancing with the bride. After dancing, each guest is offered either a drink of "top shelf" beverage of "special" sweet. Then they join hands and circle the dancing bride. After some guests have danced with the bride, the groom is supposed to join her and carry her out of the reception-- off to the honeymoon. The guests often make the anxious groom "work" to reach his prized bride, as they make a human wall around her. Eventually, of course, the groom happily reaches her and whisks her off to happy-ever-after!
Devon and Lydia have known each other for quite sometime as they have been neighbors since Lydia's family moved to Ohio when she was five years old. As many of you know, Lydia has an older brother, Jeremy, who is Devon's age. They quickly became friends and all of us (and other neighborhood kids) would play together in our backyards. We would typically build tree forts, play flashlight tag, and in the creek. It was all fun and games until one day, Devon put Lydia in a chicken wing a little too hard... then Lydia was not Devon's biggest fan. All jokes aside, the two grew up going to the same schools but running in different crowds as Devon is two years older than Lydia. Fast forward, it is 2020 and Covid hit. Lydia was sent home from college and Devon was living at home going to paramedic school. One night Lydia and Devon's friend, Bailey, was over at Devon's and asked Lydia to join. Bailey said she had a brilliant idea... "you should date Devon!". Lydia said "he's my neighbor?" However, Bailey continued to invite Lydia to hangout with Devon and friends. Finally, Devon asked Lydia on a date (after asking Jeremy if it was okay). Due to everything being closed, the two just drove around and listened to music. They ended up having a fun filled summer and made it official. Devon ended up getting a phone call that he was hired full-time at Violet Township Fire Department on his way to celebrate his birthday with Lydia. Then, Lydia went back to school, graduated, and a got a job with Teach for America. This sent her to Hawai'i to teach for a year so they did long distance. They tried to visit each other as much as they could during Lydia's breaks. A very special visit was in February 2022 when Devon came to pop the question! Now Lydia teaches in Columbus, Devon is at Violet, and they live in Millersport with Jeremy-lol!
