The day DeVante and I met was an ordinary day for the both of us. At the time I was working in the convenience store behind DeVante’s job at XPO Logistics. Almost every morning, he would come in to grab a drink and a pack of gum, every other time a pop tart. Each time I checked him out at the register, we would say something slick and mess around with each other. I did it just to get him to smile. I started it, but he always finished it. Of course if you know DeVante, he always has a comeback and corny jokes to follow. Time went by without much communication until the manager of the store, which to whom I was close with, tried to hook both DeVante and I up together. Close to 8pm was the normal time both DeVante and his homeboy, Marvin came into the convenience store. This specific day DeVante didn’t come in. The store manager and I were talking when his homeboy Marvin came in, got what he needed and left. As he was leaving, the store manager went outside acting like she was sweeping the parking lot and asked Marvin was his friend (DeVante) was single. I seen her talking to him and was confused on what she even said to him. She came walking back in blushing because she knew she was being sneaky. I asked her what did she do and her response was “oh I just asked him was his friend single for you.” Now at this point, I was shocked and cannot believe she really did that. Fast forward to the next day. I came in for work on second shift again to find out that the store manager pulled another fast one. Come to find out, she spoke with DeVante that morning when he came in to grab his usual and told him that someone in the store was interested in him. He asked her who it was. She responded “she will be working tonight on second shift, so come back then to find out who it is.” Now that I knew what she told him, I was nervous almost my entire shift. Thinking on what am I supposed to say when this man come in. So here comes about 8pm, I seen that black Dodge Charger pull in the parking lot. My stomach dropped to my knee caps waiting on him to come in. He let about a couple minutes pass by before getting out the car to come inside. Next thing you know, I see him walking in and I am just standing there looking lost. He came straight to the corner smiling and asked me “so what’s this message I am hearing.” I had to play it off and asked what message, even though I was hit with this myself at the last minute. He said “this message that you are interested in me.” I asked him “well are you interested?” He said “we can see where it will go and we can plan something like dinner depending on our work schedules.” Then he asked for my number and I wrote it down. He said something about my handwriting, which is not ugly, so I had a comeback for him. I told him that I bet his handwriting looks like a kindergartner, so he grabbed a brown paper bag and wrote his name and number down on it. I busted out laughing because it wasn’t that bad. He was smiling as he walked out the door. Later on that night, I got a text from him and from that day we began to get to know each other. It’s now been three plus years and we are finally tying the knot!
