The Tram Line 28E is one of Lisbon’s most popular photo spots and a must-do if you are in Lisbon for a weekend. Riding on the Tram 28E is a special experience because it winds through Lisbon’s narrow streets with only a few inches of space between the tram and the houses. The tram runs every 10 minutes from Martim Moniz to Campo Ourique and back again. To grab a seat, hop on at Campo Ourique. To save money, use the Navegante card, which is also your ticket for public transportation. A good alternative to the 28E is line 12E – which even follows the same route in some parts.
Travel Note
Alfama is the oldest most characterful district of Lisbon. It is a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and traditional houses that meander up a steep hill from the banks of the Rio Tejo to the Sao Jorge castle. Within Alfama, you'll find many of Lisbons most iconic historic buildings, including the Se Cathedral, the Castelo de Sao Jorge, the Panteao Nacional and the Igreja de Santo Antonio.
Travel Note
While a ‘cervejaria’ is traditionally a place to drink beer, Cervejaria Ramiro – which has been around since the 1950s – also serves up what is arguably the best seafood in Lisbon. Sometimes it gets so busy guests must take numbered tickets and wait their turn – perhaps the effect of a glowing recommendation from the late Anthony Bourdain. The charmingly retro, no-frills dining room boasts seascape murals on the wall and a large lobster tank. From goose barnacles to clams in garlic sauce, everything is cooked to perfection and served up without a shred of pretension.
