A Turkish henna party is a female-only event that represents the bride-to-be’s departure from her parents’ home into a home of her own. It marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another.
You eat, drink, dance, and have lots of fun!
About 2 hours before the party ends, the bride-to-be changes into a traditional henna attire and has a song sung to her before the henna is applied to her hands. It lasts about 10-15 minutes. This ceremony is more solemn and it is not uncommon to see the bride’s mother and family cry!
Traditionally, the groom joins after the henna ceremony is over. He comes to celebrate with his bride-to-be and only stays for a little while. However, because the bride- and groom- to- be will not be having a wedding in America, the couple will be together and celebrate with their guests (together) for a longer period of time. They are planning on cutting a ceremonious cake and the bride might even wear a white dress!
