Derrick and Maggie met through Maggie's cousin and her husband. It all started by Derrick adding Maggie on Snapchat. A few days later they went on a double date with Maggie's cousin and her husband. A few days after that, they went on their first date and ended the night falling asleep on Derrick's couch. Fast forward three and a half years later they are living in a townhome together with their two-year-old German Shepherd named Nova. Maggie is finishing up her degree to become a teacher and Derrick is a delivery and appliance installer for Karls TV & Appliance.

Derrick and Maggie had made plans to go out with his cousin TJ and his girlfriend Katie at Applebees. Maggie knew something was up and spent the night prior looking for a ring. After eating supper they were going to meet back at Derrick and Maggie's house for a game night with Maggie's best friend Ashley. Shortly after Ashley got there, Maggie went into the other room. Once she came out, Derrick stated that there was something on their dog Nova's collar. Thinking it was a bug, she was nervous to go near him, but then Derrick moved Nova's dog tags and Maggie saw the ring. Derrick got down on one knee and asked Maggie to marry him.
